Very Arty Afternoons

Quintilian School, Mt Claremont
4 and 8 week options - Wednesdays

Our program explores different topics of resilience such as mistake making, gratitude, helpful thinking, self esteem, and perspective within a strengths framework.  Each term there is a new theme with new art, STEAM and play activities and projects. Our final class is always an opportunity for families to join our class, do some art, activities and admire the work that has been produced.

Term 1: I am AMAZING

Resilient kids are guided by their strengths and values when facing challenges.  

Creating confidence and exploring strengths. Children will explore self-esteem and the language of self-confidence, two concepts critical for resilient children. Children will create unique artwork that celebrates celebrates how truly amazing and unique they are. They will also learn to spot their own strengths, how to grow them and identify how they can unleash them to tackle problems, mistakes or bounce forward when things go wrong. Each child will create their own Book of Me.

Term 2:  Brain House  

Resilient kids recognise unhelpful thoughts and have strategies to deal with them.  

Children learn to recognise their own emotions as normal and identify helpful and unhelpful thought which supports them to become more resilient. We will explore imagination, creative thinking and “Can-Do”, all vital components of the resilient children. We explore what happens in our brain when we make mistakes and what happens when adopt a growth mindset.   Art projects will assist children in recognising when they are jumping to conclusions or catastrophising and help them develop helpful thinking and acting strategies when Perfect Peter, Angry Adam or any other unhelpful characters take over their Brain House.  Children will create a character and bring it to life with painting, sculpture, drawing and more. All this along with our regular DOSE of resilience and gratitude.

Term 3:  No BIG deal

Resilient kids keep things in perspective

From a mere glitch to a full-blown emergency children create a toolbox of strategies to cope with day to day events. This program is focused on keeping a check on our emotions when things go wrong.  Art projects will assist children in recognising when they are jumping to conclusions or catastrophising and help them develop helpful thinking and acting strategies . Through our projects which include water colour painting and sculpture children will learn about perspective in life and art.  With activities such as designing their own “Perspect-a-tron” and “Book of Challenges” which helps keep things in perspective. There will also be some tricky weaving and drawing to develop our grit!  

Term 4: I am Grateful

Resilient kids are grateful.

 

Gratitude and thanks are key to reducing stress and a sense of belonging. This term supports the development of children who are optimistic and practice gratitude which is the ability to be thankful for the good, express thanks and feel blessed. Children will be challenged to practice gratitude with our own Gratitude Challenge game and reflect on what they are grateful for through beautiful art projects.
